Ernő Dohnányi | photo: Library of Congress
Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnányi lived to eighty-three but left only forty-eight opus numbers. This is because his enduring place in music comes from more than the music he wrote. He was also a pianist considered at the time to be the successor to Franz Liszt with an extensive international performing career, he was a busy conductor, a teacher of piano in Berlin, and was essentially in charge of the Budapest Academy of Music. (And he's also the grandfather of conductor Christoph von Dohnányi).
His 1909 "Suite in F-sharp minor" is a lively piece that begins with repetitions of a theme in a set of variations, goes through quirky Scherzo and sweet Romance movements before ending with a Rondo, all of it varied in colorful orchestration and rhythms. It's today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
