Jean Sibelius got very creative in structuring his 7th and final symphony. Instead of writing the usual five parts for strings (1st & 2nd violins, viola, cello & basses), he divided the strings into TEN parts, resulting in unexpected complexity and tone. And instead of building variety into a movement in the traditional manner by maintaining a mostly constant tempo but introducing contrasting themes in different keys, this symphony has all the significant passages remaining in C major or C minor but with constantly changing tempo. Among other compositional trickery. The Sibelius Symphony No. 7 is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
