Twenty-five years after meeting in 1853 and being great friends all that time, Johannes Brahms consulted with violinist Joseph Joachim for technical advice on writing what would be Brahms’ only Violin Concerto. Joachim was the soloist at the premiere on January 1st 1879 with Brahms conducting. Legendary violinist Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) studied violin with Leopold Auer, who had studied with Joachim. Hear a 1955 recording of the Brahms Concerto with Heifetz for today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
