A Quintet of Trout! | Image: US Fish and Wildlife Service [public domain]
The 22 year old Franz Schubert was having a happy summer in “inconceivably lovely” countryside with friends when a wealthy amateur cellist requested Schubert to compose a quintet that included variations on Schubert’s earlier song with its charming melody, “The Trout.” The result from that happy summer commission is Schubert’s delightful “Trout Quintet” and it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
