Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Franz Schubert's nearly 44-minute "Grand Duo" Symphony is an orchestration of the composer's sonata for piano four-hands. About 27 years after Schubert's death, the enthusiasm of Johannes Brahms for the sonata led his friend, violinist Joseph Joachim, to orchestrate it into a symphony. But perhaps being his friend, some have said Joachim's resulting symphony sounds more like Brahms than Schubert. The "Grand Duo" Symphony in C-major ("by Schubert") is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
