César Franck | photo by Pierre Petit, 1887
Belgian-born French composer César Franck wrote his most well-known music starting in about his late 50s including his only symphony, in d-minor, at about age 66. Premiered in 1889 the year before he died, the Symphony received mixed reviews. Symphonies weren't a popular format in France at that time, which was considered a more "German" form than French, though many critics thought it well composed. Nonetheless, it became a standard in the orchestral repertoire. Celebrate César Franck’s birthday tomorrow with his Symphony in d-minor for today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
