"The symphony is so melancholy that you will not be able to bear it. I have never written anything so sad.” Johannes Brahms had the sense of humor of an old-fashioned grump, and he was clearly kidding about this wonderfully sunny music.
While it took Brahms 21 years to write his first symphony, it took him only a couple summer months to write his second. It’s cheery and happy throughout, all the way to the blaze of brass at the end. The Symphony No. 2 of Johannes Brahms is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2pm.
