After the international success of his early Moravian Duets and Slavonic Dances, Czech composer Antonín Dvořák was commissioned to write a string quartet also "in the Slav spirit." The result was his 1879 String Quartet No. 10, sometimes known as the "Slavonic," and its renown spread so quickly that within months it was performed in Prague, Vienna and across Germany. It's been described as "one of the finest quartets in the world repertoire" for its eloquent melodies, flawless composition and refinement. [www.antonin-dvorak.cz]. It's today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
