Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in 1877 into a family of Polish descent, the life of composer Sergei Bortkiewicz was made difficult by war and its factions. First in WWI, then in Russia by the Bolsheviks during the Revolution, and later still by the Nazis in WWII, all this time being under house arrest, or deported or living in exile. But his later life was particularly more comfortable. In 1945 he was awarded a professorship in Vienna, the Bortkiewicz Society was founded in 1947 in Vienna to keep his music alive, and upon his retirement in 1948 was awarded an honorary pension from Vienna. For his 75th birthday in 1952, a concert in his honor was presented in Vienna with many of his works performed including his 1912 Piano Concerto No. 1, which is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
