Sir George Dyson in 1952 by Anthony Devas
The son of a Blacksmith and a weaver who were both members of amateur choirs, English composer George Dyson (1883-1964) was encouraged toward music and by age 13 was the local church organist. After study at the Royal College of Music and service in the First World War (which left him shell shocked) and other military service until 1920, he worked as a schoolmaster and college lecturer before becoming director of the Royal College of Music in 1938, the first of its alumni to do so. Dyson received a knighthood in 1941, the same year he composed his Violin Concerto which is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
