Robert and Clara Schumann in 1847
Robert Schumann's focus in 1842 was chamber music when he composed string quartets, piano trios, a piano quartet and, what many have called one of the greatest chamber works of all time, his Opus 44 Piano Quintet in E-Flat. The work is dedicated to his wife Clara who gave the Quintet its first public performance in January 1843, called it "splendid, full of vigor and freshness," and performed the work throughout her life. Robert Schumann's masterful Piano Quintet is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
