Hamilton Harty (1879-1941)
After early music lessons from his local church organist father and then himself holding posts of church organist, Irish composer Hamilton Harty moved from his small town about 12 miles south of Belfast to Dublin at age 16 where he took music lessons. Then to London at 20 where he soon became an in-demand accompanist then at 24 a conductor of the Halle Orchestra (in Manchester) and, later, the London Symphony Orchestra. He was knighted in 1925 and passed away in 1941 at the age of 61. While many of his compositions are overtly “Irish,” some are more subtly so, such as his Piano Concerto from 1922. It’s this afternoon’s Midday Masterpiece.
