Friedrich Dotzauer (1783-1860)
German composer and cellist Friedrich Dotzauer served with notable German orchestras including for 29 years as principal cellist at the Dresden Court Orchestra where he was among the musicians for the premieres of Richard Wagner's operas Reinzi and The Flying Dutchman. He was also a renowned teacher and composed student exercises that are still assigned to cello students. As a composer he wrote church music, opera, concertos, sonatas and chamber music including his remarkable 1835 Quintet for 2 Violins, Viola & 2 Cellos. It's today's Midday Masterpiece.
