Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)
The Piano Concerto No. 2 by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns opens unusually with more than a minute-and-a-half piano solo. Often the orchestra plays that long before the piano enters. Perhaps his most popular concerto, the capricious nature of styles across all movements prompted Polish composer and pianist Zygmunt Stojowski to joke that it "begins with Bach and ends with Offenbach." Well-crafted and demanding of the soloist, the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Saint-Saëns is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
