1803 Portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven by Christian Hornemann
The chamber trio of piano, violin, and cello was a familiar form in the late 1700s. Such a trio could also show off the new piano that was quickly replacing the harpsichord and could be a showcase for emerging piano virtuosos. But in 1804 Beethoven tried something no one else had yet done: basically, a Concerto, placing a piano trio as the solo instrument against an orchestra. Balancing three different timbres of instruments against a full orchestra, combined with giving each of the piano, violin and cello sufficiently interesting and challenging themes, was a formidable task. It’s a work of great bravura in both senses of the word: excellence and daring. Beethoven’s Triple Concerto Concerto for Piano, Violin, Cello and Orchestra is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
