English composer Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) premiered his Symphony No. 4 in 1889 to generally positive reviews. But Parry was dissatisfied and revised it in 1910. The new version had one performance in 1911 then was never heard again for 80 years until it was recorded in 1992. Part of the problem in 1911 was that audiences now preferred newer music of younger English composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst who, wouldn’t you know, were former students of Parry. That 1992 recording of the revised version of Hubert Parry’s Symphony No. 4 is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
