Richard Strauss had retired from writing new music when, just as World War 2 ended, he met an American oboist with the US Army Band who inspired Strauss to compose a new Oboe Concerto in 1945. A 2002 Grammy-winning performance of the Strauss Oboe Concerto in D is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
