Luigi Boccherini's Quintet No. 9 for Guitar and Strings is titled "La ritirata di Madrid" (The Retreat from Madrid) for its fourth movement effect that evokes the image of a military troop approaching then retreating. The movement begins softly, as if from a distance, builds, then recedes back to quiet as if in retreat at the end.

performed at Carnegie Hall in New York with his ensemble El Mundo who are dedicated to the performance of 16th- through 19th-century Latin American, Spanish, and Italian chamber music.
