Classical Music Playlist, February 14, 2023
“Spring”, “September”, “When Falling Asleep”, and “At Sunset” are the final completed works of Richard Strauss. Through lyrics about death and acceptance, they reflect an 84-year-old composer at peace with knowing his time is up. The Four Last Songs feature a soprano and an especially prominent horn part, making them deeply personal to Strauss – his wife was a soprano, and his father was a horn player.
Today, you can celebrate soprano Renee Fleming’s birthday with Strauss’s Four Last Songs, your Midday Masterpiece at 2pm.
