Sergei Rachmaninoff circa 1921 | photo: Library of Congress
Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote most of his most famous works before settling in America in 1918. Once in America, an intense touring schedule as a pianist and conductor left him with little time to compose.
However, in 1934, Rachmaninoff found some time to write his most famous post-move work, which is also his final work for piano and orchestra. Written after his four official concertos, the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a perfect career capstone and summarizes so many of Rachmaninoff's favorite compositional techniques - from the richly romantic 18th Variation, to the repeated use of the Dies Irae Gregorian chant, to an array of technical fireworks on the piano. You can hear them all as your Midday Masterpiece today at 2pm, right here on CapRadio.
