Carl Reinecke (1824 - 1910) kicked off a long conducting and teaching career with his first professorship and music director positions in his 20s. In his 30s, he took over the orchestra in Leipzig and became professor of composition and piano at the conservatory, posts he'd hold for the next 40 years. Along the way, he'd conduct the premiere of Brahms's German Requiem and teach a long line of students who'd become more famous than their teacher, from Edvard Grieg to Isaac Albeniz to Ethel Smyth.
Reinecke did find time to write his own works, including this Trio for Oboe, Horn, and Piano. Reinecke wrote the piano part for himself, and all three instruments have a wonderful and charming conversation throughout. You can join in on the fun today; Carl Reinecke's Trio is your Midday Masterpiece at 2pm.
