CapRadio Classical and Jazz is celebrating women in music all month long by featuring a different classical composer every weekday. Today's spotlight is on Marianne Martinez (1744-1812).
- Marianne Martinez was an Austrian composer born into a prominent Vienna family and became widely esteemed during the age of Haydn and Mozart; in fact, she has personal associations with both.
- Though she gained fame throughout Europe during her lifetime and wrote about 200 works, including the only symphony by a woman during the Classical period, like other female composers her reputation was downplayed after her death.
- Born in 1744, the large building where her family lived in Vienna included other many notable residents including one who was unknown at the time but would become famous: in the cold attic room for a tenant of low status lived the young aspiring composer Joseph Haydn, from whom Marianne took piano lessons.
- Her talent for composition was soon recognized and begun further lessons including with the Imperial Court composer. Her talent for playing keyboard and singing grew to such proficiency that she performed before the Imperial Court.
- Her compositions eventually included symphonic masses, oratorios and instrumental works and her name and music became well known throughout Europe.
- Inconceivable for her in 1744 to hold any prominent musical position, she mostly stayed at home and wrote music for friends, for the court and for religious events. Later, she held salons in her home at which Mozart was a frequent guest who composed four-hand piano sonatas for them to perform together.
- A fire in 1927 destroyed many of her manuscripts so the full extent of her compositional output remains unclear, as well as when she began and ended writing music.
- Never married, Martinez died of tuberculosis on December 13, 1812.
Also today: In early 1776 Mozart composed a concerto for THREE pianos on a commission for the Countess Lodron and her two daughters, the youngest of whom was not as skilled a pianist as the other two ladies. Mozart wrote the piano parts to their abilities, then later adapted the entire concerto for TWO pianos, and for players of greater skill. That’s usually how Mozart’s Concerto No. 7 is heard nowadays, but we’ll air the original 3-piano version, played on period instruments, for today's Midday Masterpiece.
