Henriette Renié (1875-1956)
CapRadio Classical and Jazz is celebrating women in music all month long by featuring a different classical composer every weekday. Today's spotlight is on Henriette Renié (1875-1956).
- French harpist and composer Henriette Renié was known for her virtuosic compositions and simpler pieces for beginning students. She also codified a method of harp playing that is still used today.
- Renié was born in Paris and was soon recognized as a child prodigy on the harp and enrolled at the Paris Conservatory at the age of nine in 1884.
- This was fortunate timing because up to 1880 women were only allowed to study performance at the Conservatory. By the time she enrolled, women could now study theory, harmony and composition.
- By age 12 she had won many prizes and students from all over Paris sought her out for lessons.
- Her astonishing concerts, compositions and advocacy for the harp raised the instrument from a parlor curiosity and occasional member of orchestras (just for effects) to one of virtuosity and led to major compositions for the instrument from other composers such as Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and others.
- She was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1954, the highest decoration of merit in France.
- Henriette Renié died in March, 1956, in Paris.
- Renié's 1901 Trio for Harp, Violin and Cello is today's Midday Masterpiece.
