Classical Music Playlist, March 17, 2023
CapRadio Classical and Jazz celebrates women in music all month long by featuring a different classical composer every weekday. Today's spotlight is on composer Elena Kats-Chernin.
- Trained in Moscow, Australia, and Germany, Elena Kats-Chernin is one of Australia's leading composers.
- Born in Uzbekistan and emigrated to Australia at age 17, Kats-Chernin has written several operas, three piano concertos, orchestral, chamber and solo works, plus music for plays, ballet and musical theater, choral and other vocal music and even modern soundtracks for early silent films.
- "Her status as one of this country’s most prolific and consistently innovative composers remains unchallenged… [She] appears to achieve the impossible, straddling the two seemingly irreconcilable camps of intellectualism and accessibility." - Sydney Morning Herald
- A complete and official biography of Elena Kats-Chernin - including details of her many compositions, collaborations and commissions - can be found at Boosey & Hawkes.
Also today: The Brahms String Quintet #2 for two violins, two violas and cello - what he initially thought would be his final composition before writing a few more career encores the following year - is today's Midday Masterpiece.
