CapRadio Classical and Jazz celebrates women in music all month long by featuring a different classical composer every weekday. Today's spotlight is on composer Mélanie Bonis.
- Mélanie Hélène Bonis was born in Paris in 1858 into a non-musical family.
- She taught herself piano and, when she was 12, a professor at the Paris Conservatory persuaded her parents to allow Mélanie to study music. At age 16 César Franck gave her piano lessons and at 17 was a fellow student at the Conservatory with Claude Debussy.
- Despite excelling at classes in accompaniment, harmony and composition (and winning prizes for each) the prevailing thought was that a career as a composer was impossible for a woman as no woman could possibly compose anything of value. So, in an attempt to conceal her femininity, she adopted the pseudonym Mel Bonis.
- In 1883 her family arranged that she marry a businessman 25 years her senior. For ten years Mélanie managed the family, two elegant mansions and staff. She entertained and led a bourgeois life with no pursuit of music…
- …until ten years later when she again met a man she knew at the Paris Conservatory who encouraged her to resume composing and introduced her to musical society.
- She would go on to write over 300 works for solo piano, songs, religious music for a capella choir or accompanied by organ or harp; sonatas, quartets, a septet, and orchestral works. She put tremendous energy into music; composing, promoting it, and winning prizes.
- Mélanie died in 1937 at age 79.
