Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco in 1929
Italian-Jewish composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco wrote his Violin Concerto No. 2 in 1931 specifically for violinist Jascha Heifetz. It's a concerto of “Hebraic flavor," as the composer described it, titled "The Prophets" with movements inspired by Isaiah, Jeremiah and Elijah. Castelnuovo-Tedesco said the Concerto recalls “the splendor of past days” compared to the rising anti-Semitism that was sweeping across Europe at the time. A 1954 recording of the Concerto featuring Jascha Heifetz is today's Midday Masterpiece.
Related trivia: Jascha Heifetz premiered the Concerto in 1933 with Arturo Toscanini conducting. They would both sponsor the composer’s emigration to the United States in 1939 just as WW2 got underway amid unsafe antisemitism and after the composer’s native Italy instituted Italian racial laws in late 1938 that led to his music being banned from the radio and concert performances of his music canceled. Once he got here, Heifetz helped him get a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a film composer. He would work on scores for about 200 films at MGM and other major studios. Castelnuovo-Tedesco became a US citizen in 1946.
