Danish composer Niels Gade circa 1850
Danish composer Niels Gade had such great success with his First Symphony in Leipzig, conducted by Felix Mendelssohn, that he soon composed his Second Symphony but conducted it himself in Leipzig. Now his conducting was so praised that upon Mendelssohn's death in 1847, Gade was appointed permanent conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. That very successful 2nd Symphony by Niels Gade is today's Midday Masterpiece.
