Beethoven in his Study by Carl Schloesser (circa 1811)
Beethoven’s first two piano concertos are numbered by the order they were published, not composed. Therefore, what we call his Piano Concerto No. 2 was actually composed first, and his Piano Concerto No. 1 was composed second. The first-composed (“No. 2”) is a more youthful composition for a minimal orchestra. The second-composed (“No. 1”) is a more mature work and utilizes a full orchestra. This larger-scale “Piano Concerto No. 1” is today's Midday Masterpiece.
