As Director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905, Théodore Dubois maintained a conservative curriculum strictly of the time. He excluded earlier French baroque music such as by Jean-Philippe Rameau and revolutionary music of Richard Wagner. He forbade Conservatory students to attend performances of Debussy's ground-breaking new opera, Pelléas et Mélisande, and was hostile to student Maurice Ravel when he did not conform to Dubois' anti-modernism (and was expelled twice after two admissions). Nonetheless, Dubois composed a considerable amount of music in the French Romantic tradition marked with fine melodies and refined taste. Hear this in his 1907 Piano Quartet in A-minor for today's Midday Masterpiece.
