In the hundred years between Mozart and the end of the 19th century, few major composers had written Piano Quartets. Czech composer Antonín Dvořák had written one in 1875 and in 1889 his publisher had the good luck to ask for a second while Dvořák was in a particularly productive period. While composing his new quartet, Dvořák wrote to a friend that “it's going unexpectedly easily and melodies are coming to me in droves.” Dvořák’s Piano Quartet No. 2 is today’s Midday Masterpiece with the Emerson String Quartet joined by pianist Menahem Pressler who just passed away on May 6th.
