Sir William Walton by Bassano Ltd, 3 April 1937. Photographs Collection NPG.
The 26 year old English composer William Walton was asked to compose a Viola concerto for a renowned player who declined to perform it because it sounded too "modern." (After hearing the premiere, the violist regretted his decision.) Most everyone else loved it, including the famed music critic Sir Donald Tovey who wrote, "this seems to me to be one of the most important modern concertos for any instrument, and I can see no limits to what may be expected of the tone-poet who could create it." Indeed, the Concerto established the young composer as a leading British composer. William Walton's Viola Concerto is today's Midday Masterpiece.
