Aaron Copland in 1942 photo: Library of Congress | Flag photo by Michael Browning on Unsplash
Premiered in 1946 and written to reflect the euphoric mood of the country at the end of WW II, Aaron Copland emphasized American heroism in his Symphony No. 3 by reprising his 1942 “Fanfare for the Common Man” as a theme in the final movement. When he premiered the “Fanfare” years earlier he said, “It was the common man, after all, who was doing all the dirty work in the war and the army. He deserved a fanfare.” For Memorial Day, Aaron Copland's Symphony No. 3 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
