The Symphony No. 1 by the 23 year old Sergei Rachmaninoff had a disastrous premiere performance. Conductor Alexander Glazunov gave the symphony very little rehearsal and, it’s been said, he was drunk on the podium. The whole experience devastated Rachmaninoff so badly that for three years he composed nothing more until after months of psychotherapy and hypnosis. Finally, Rachmaninoff emerged from his funk with his spectacularly successful Piano Concerto No. 2, but writing symphonies still intimidated him. He didn’t compose his Second Symphony for another ten years. After Rachmaninoff’s death, performances of his Symphony No. 1, with better conductors, have led it to be hailed as a triumph. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
