David Venni / Decca Classics
In the liner notes of her new CD, “Childhood Tales,” pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason says that games and play were about equal to music in her family home of seven musical siblings. Childhood imagination and playful invention were eventually channeled into music, and the new release explores this playful musical spirit of childhood in works by Robert Schumann, Debussy, Mozart and Ernst von Dohnányi. The latter’s 1914 composition for piano and orchestra, “Variations on a Nursery Song” (subtitled “for the enjoyment of friends of humour, to the annoyance of others”) inventively plays with the tune popularly known as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
