Sergei Rachmaninoff circa 1921 | photo: Library of Congress
When Sergei Rachmaninoff premiered his Symphony No. 3 in 1936, audiences who remembered his earlier lush orchestrations and melodies thought this new music too modern. Yet modernists of the time thought the music was 40 years behind. As a result, the symphony languished with few performances. Though he was disappointed, Rachmaninoff remained confident in the work, saying "it’s quite possible that in fifty years’ time it will be rediscovered…and become a sensational success.” It took only until the 1970s until much of his work was re-examined and given more favorable reviews. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3 in a new recording from the Philadelphia Orchestra is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
