Teddy Abrams | photo: Arnold O'Neil
Composer Teddy Abrams was born in Berkeley in 1987 and was a member of the San Francisco Youth Symphony for seven seasons and a protégé of Michael Tilson Thomas from the age of eleven. In 2005 he became the youngest conducting student ever accepted at the Curtis Institute. Since 2014 Abrams has been Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra whom he conducts on a new recording with pianist Yuja Wang performing his own 2021 Piano Concerto.
Deutsche Grammophon quotes Abrams about the music: "I see this concerto as an opportunity for the piano to take us through what I think is one of the strengths of American culture: its plurality, its interconnectedness." The concerto is divided into eleven sections, including a swing-style big band overture, three solo cadenzas, Latin jazz-inspired "solos" and passages reminiscent of boogie-woogie, American gospel songs, or Broadway showstoppers. This Piano Concerto is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
