Ricardo Castro (1864-1907)
Born in 1864, Mexican pianist and composer Ricardo Castro studied in Europe and became quite an international sensation as well as contributed to the development of classical music in Mexico in the European traditions. He studied early with the greatest pianist in Mexico, toured the US and later dedicated his efforts to composition and wrote concertos, operas and chamber music. In 1900 he began teaching at the National Conservatory of Mexico and later became its director. With help of stipends from the Mexican president, in 1903 he established a residence in Paris where he became friends with Teresa Carreño and made the acquaintance of Cécile Chaminade and Camille Saint-Saëns who offered him support for his Parisian recitals. This led to his success in Belgium where in 1904 he premiered his Piano Concerto which was likened to similar works of Grieg, Chopin, Saint-Saëns and Liszt. He returned to Mexico in 1906 a national hero and in October of that year was invited to play his Concerto for the Mexican president on the occasion of his 25th wedding anniversary. A new release of Ricardo Castro's Piano Concerto in A-minor is today's Midday Masterpiece.
