Violinist Joseph Joachim and composer Johannes Brahms in their younger years
Johannes Brahms and Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim became instant and great friends upon meeting in their early 20s in 1853. Brahms wasn't yet known but the violinist was already a celebrity (and a more accomplished composer than Brahms at that point) who encouraged and endorsed the budding young composer and in the 1860s they even toured together with Brahms as Joachim’s pianist. 25 years into the friendship, Brahms was now famous and wrote his only violin concerto for Joachim who assisted the pianist-composer with technical advice about writing for the violin. The premiere was on January 1, 1879 with Joachim as the soloist and Brahms (inadvertently underdressed, causing murmurs in the audience) conducted. Since about 1900 the Concerto has been considered one of the greatest ever written and one of the most performed. For Joseph Joachim’s birthday today, the Brahms Violin Concerto is today's Midday Masterpiece.
