Sergei Rachmaninoff circa 1921
2023 is the 150th anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninoff (born April 1st, 1873). To mark the occasion, record label Deutsche Grammophon TODAY has released a new double-CD set that includes the composer's 2nd and 3rd Symphonies recorded by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Rachmaninoff had a long association with "The Fabulous Philadelphians," making his first appearance with them as a piano soloist in 1909. Over the next 34 years he conducted or played with them many times, recorded his music with them and wrote many of his works with their sound in mind. It's perfectly fitting, then, that in this anniversary year the Philadelphia Orchestra releases what has been called Rachmaninoff's most romantic symphony. That brand new (61-minute!) release of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
