Beethoven in his Study by Carl Schloesser (circa 1811)
A music publisher titled Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 15 the “Pastoral” sonata. Whether Beethoven actually intended to give the music a rural or rustic impression is unknown. But as he wrote this when he was alarmed at his increasing hearing loss, he may have sought to ease his worry by writing a work with a lighter and calming “pastoral”-type mood. Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Piano Sonata No. 15 is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
