"Carmina Burana" from 1936 by Carl Orff is a cantata with text based on 24 poems from a collection written in the 11th to 13th centuries titled "Carmina Burana." The poems Orff selected address worldly pleasures such as springtime and love, drinking and gambling, gluttony and lust. And Fate. The hour-long work begins and ends with "O Fortuna" about the goddess who spins the wheel of fate for men and gods that randomly assigns some with fortune and others misfortune. Carl Orff was born on this date in 1895 and we’re celebrating with his complete hour-long “Carmina Burana” for today’s Midday Masterpiece.
