In 1789 Mozart met the King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm II (the amateur cellist second son of Frederick the Great), who was impressed and commissioned six string quartets. Mozart completed only three and noted only one in his personal catalog as being written "for his Majesty the King of Prussia." Mozart had become sidetracked with writing his opera Cosi fan tutte but eventually wrote two more quartets for the commission without specifically noting the other two were for the King. Still, the three are now referred to as the "Prussian Quartets," and that first, the String Quartet No. 21 (K. 575) is today's Midday Masterpiece.
