As Director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905, Théodore Dubois maintained a conservative curriculum strictly of the era. He excluded earlier French baroque music such as by Jean-Philippe Rameau and later revolutionary music of Richard Wagner. And though he privately admired Wagner and Debussy, he forbade Conservatory students to attend performances of Debussy's ground-breaking new opera, Pelléas et Mélisande. And leading to a scandal that eventually got him relieved of his post as Director of the Conservatory, Dubois was outright hostile to student Maurice Ravel when he did not conform to Dubois' Conservatory rule of anti-modernism (and was expelled twice after two admissions). Nonetheless, Dubois composed a considerable amount of music in the French Romantic tradition marked with fine melodies and refined taste such as in his Piano Concerto No. 2, today’s Midday Masterpiece.
