Today it’s mind-boggling to think that when Mozart composed his only Clarinet Quintet (K. 581) in 1789, his esteem in Vienna had fallen so low that he needed to borrow money and even the clarinetist for whom he wrote the Quintet earned more than him. Plus, his wife was ill with a difficult pregnancy and that child would die an hour after birth. And though there are some musical moments that mirror his conditions of this unhappy year, the sunny Mozart optimism mostly shines through the tuneful Clarinet Quintet. Celebrating his 44th birthday today,
Anthony McGill is the soloist with the Pacifica Quartet in the Mozart Clarinet Quintet for today’s Midday Masterpiece.
