Swedish composer Dag Wirén (1905–1986)
Swedish composer Dag Wirén (1905–1986) studied music first in Stockholm 1926 to 1931 then won a state financial prize which he used toward further study in Paris 1931-34. He returned to Sweden in 1934 with his bride, the Irish cellist Noel Franks, whom he had met in Paris. It was to her that he dedicated his Symphony No. 2, composed 1938-39 and premiered in 1940. It's been noted as a romantic, light and pastoral work, and it's today's Midday Masterpiece.
