Pianist and composer Johann Hummel (1778-1837) began as a child prodigy who was taught for two years for free by Mozart and later by Haydn, and later still was friends with Beethoven and Schubert and remained respected throughout his life. Socially, he created one of the first pension funds for musicians and performed benefit concerts when the retirement fund ran low. He was also one of the first to advocate for musical copyright protections against piracy. Featuring British pianist Sir Stephen Hough who was just knighted on July 11th by King Charles, Hummel’s 1819 Piano Concerto No. 3 in B-minor is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
