Classical Music Playlist, August 2, 2023
From the mid 1700s "Harmoniemusik" was a popular musical form typically for a sextet of winds: pairs of oboes, bassoons and horns. These ensembles often played transcriptions of light music from popular operas and ballet at events and intended as 'background music' to be overheard rather than listened to intently. In 1782, Emperor Joseph II established his own Harmoniemusik ensemble but with four pairs of instruments: the above, plus clarinets. This octet arrangement (with occasional instrument variations) became the fashion, and it's possible that Mozart composed his Serenade No. 12 for Winds for the Emperor's new Harmoniemusik Octet. But unusually, it's in a minor key which makes the Serenade rather dark and not the typical light entertainment of Harmoniemusik heard "in the background." Exactly why and for whom he composed this darker music remains a mystery. Mozart's Serenade No. 12 in c-minor is today's Midday Masterpiece.
