Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Franz Schubert admired Mozart and in 1816 wrote in his diary, "O Mozart! immortal Mozart! what countless impressions of a brighter, better life hast thou stamped upon our souls!” This was the year Schubert composed his 5th Symphony with a rather Mozartean feel just 25 years after Mozart’s death. But save for a private performance, Schubert’s 5th never had its public premiere until 13 years after his own death. Schubert's Symphony No. 5 is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
