Born in Prague in 1794, Ignaz Moscheles settled in Vienna in 1808 and became one of Europe's most popular composers and one of Vienna's most admired men. A friend and benefactor of Beethoven, he knew Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, and became not just a teacher but friend and eventual colleague of Felix Mendelssohn in Leipzig where Moscheles taught for several decades from 1846. In Vienna he taught Louise Farrenc and, later in Leipzig, Arthur Sullivan of Gilbert and Sullivan fame. For 25 years from 1821 he lived and worked in London where his Piano Concerto No. 5 was the first work he composed there (over a period of years) and premiered in 1832. It's today's Midday Masterpiece.
