Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) in 1888
Edvard Grieg wrote three string quartets. His first, written as a student, is now lost. His third was left incomplete at his death. Completed in 1878, his second in G-minor was groundbreaking and influential. Grieg uses the full sonority of the instruments for an almost orchestral fullness while also being folkloric in character with influence from songs and dance. It’s a quartet of textural variety in its sound and rhythmic vitality in its movement. And it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
